Building Community and Democracy
for the Common Good Project
GrassRoots Institute (GRI) re-energized its popular education program with a series of ten workshops on Elections 2024: Saving Democracy for the Common Good that followed the election process, results and ramifications from September 2024 through February 2025. Each workshop featured a local celebrity guest co-host. Topics included the value of non-partisan politics, the issues and funding related to local elections, and the potential impacts that election results might have on Mendocino County.
In April 2025, GRI introduced a new course of workshops on People Power Over Money Power. Built on the framework of GRI’s original course GrassRoots Solutions to Corporate Power, these workshops focus on the systemic problems and viable solutions around:
• Money Power, Democracy, and the Rise of Grassroots Popular Power
• Economic Democracy or Money Power Hegemony • Crisis of the Commons, Reclaiming Our Commons
• Global Governance: Who or What Will Rule the World
These People Power workshops will continue through July 12. Future workshops will focus on building a social solidarity economy in Mendocino County. All workshops have been available in-person and on Zoom. They were also all recorded and available on the GRI Courses web pages.
