People Power Over Money Power

GRI is reigniting this course to confront the illegitimate actions of a wealthy few debasing our democracy and ignoring imminent environmental threats to life as we know it. GRI’s original course on GrassRoots Solutions to Corporate Power exposed the historic and current actions of corporations to destroy our democracy and imperiling the environmental future of the planet. We have updated this course to focus on the money powered elite who are enriching themselves with the corporate system, while impoverishing most of humanity and destroying the natural systems crucial to our survival on planet earth. We need to understand where things went wrong in the past if we are going to build a viable path for a vibrant future.

We advocate for solutions to strengthen our democracy and ensure a healthy environmental future. We push to reclaim our democracy by getting money out of politics and ending voter suppression. We promote worker and community control of our economy. We advocate for changing our legal system to recognize and embrace the rights of nature.

This course exposes the faulty assumptions of the wealthy aristocrats of the British Empire who developed classical economic theory. They based the economy on faulty assumptions that Earth’s resources would last forever, that natural systems providing the basis for our survival have no value, and that labor would only be paid subsistence wages.

These early economists also promulgated the fallacious idea that the invisible hand of the market would provide maximum benefits for all. In reality, the rich will always be the winners in any market situation. Markets also fail to take into account the earth destroying costs of pollution, resource depletion, human alienation and much more caused by the hierarchical economic system imposed on us by economic elites. Those costs are mounting and we are going to suffer the consequences unless we start solving the systemic problems soon. This course provides tools and resources to develop the needed solutions. It is our time to do it.
